The Daily Telegraph has officially announced today that Hamdan has returned to his family's home on Thursday "after presenting a commercial guarantee,'' a relative claimed. In Hamdan's case, the guarantee “is due to the fact that he remains a suspected member of al-Qaeda,'' an official said who insisted to remain anonymous. He has been held at the political security prison ever since he returned to Yemen in November, last year.
Back in late 2001, the 40-year-old driver was arrested by US forces in Afghanistan and was taken to Guantanamo in 2002. Although he denied any involvement in terrorist activities, Bin Laden's former driver was found guilty of providing material support to terrorism. More importantly, he was accused of conspiring and planning attacks for al-Qaeda.
In the first Guantanamo terrorism trial, he was convicted to five years and six months for supporting terrorism by a jury of six US military officers. But taking into consideration the time he served Osama Bin Laden, they added another five months to this sentence.
It seems that Hamdan drove or accompanied bin Laden to Al-Qaeda-sponsored training camps, news conferences or lectures between 1996 and November 2001. After all, it was the nature of his job to follow bin Laden everywhere...
