Bimota Can Race in EVO Class, No Points until Enough Bikes Are Manufactured

Earlier in February we reported that Bimota was to miss the WSBK debut round at Phillip Island, because of having failed to produce enough bikes to meet the FIM and Dorna homologation requirements. They are still nowhere near the target, but things are on the move.

FIM and Dorna officials have visited the Bimota plant in Rimini, Italy, and the first steps in the homologation process have been taken. FIM Technical Coordinator and Motorcycle Homologation Officer Charles Hannekan and Dorna WSBK Sporting Director Gregorio Lavilla have traveled to Italy last week and met the new Binota owners. They have been welcomed by Daniele Longoni, Bimota Vice President and Andrea Acquaviva, Bimota Technical Director, and got a tour of the factory.

The two Bimota representatives also presented the sporting officials the plans for the current season and the manufacturing forecasts. It looks like Bimota will need some more 4 months to complete the 125 motorcycles required for racing homologation.

Hannekam and Lavilla also inspected the homologation documents and the first units to roll from the assembly line, as well as collecting the parts which needed to pass the technical inspections during the WSBK racing weekend at Motorland Aragon.

The FIM and Dorna officials will pay another visit to the Rimini factory by the end of the month to continue the homologation process, but Bimota has got green light for racing. Team Alstare Bimota can compete in the EVO class, but will not earn any points until the 125 bikes mentioned above are manufactured. Still, this is a very important step for Alstare Bimota, as they can now pit their machine against the rest of the grid under proper racing conditions, a major step forward in the development of the bike.

One of the three Bimota founders, designer maestro Massimo Tamburini recently passed away.
