A while back we were telling you that the last 30 Jahre BMW M5 in the US (and possibly the world) will go on auction in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 15. Well, January 15 was Thursday and now we’re here to tell you who won the coveted car.

His name is Rick Hendrick and he is both a BMW dealer and a famed NASCAR team owner with a big heart. His worth is estimated north of $1 billion so you can see why paying $700,000 for a car is not a big deal to him. That’s right, the last 30th Anniversary M5 was sold for 700k.   While some rushed to say that this is a gross exaggeration and that Rick made a big mistake paying that much for this car, we applaud him and, given if we were in the same position, we’d gladly do it too because it was all for charity.   All the money will be going to the Tire Rack Teen Street Survival Program and the BMW CCA Foundation that are trying to fund teen safety programs. If one dollar of this money saves a life, than it’s well worth the effort.   As for the auction itself, the car was introduced by none other than Ludwig Willisch, the CEO of BMW North America and Bobby Rahal, the owner of the BMW Team RLL that races in various motorsport events across the US. An important factor might’ve been the speech of Bill Wade, the National Program Manager for Street Survival that talked about what the teen driving program is all about.
