A man from Kansas lost his life on the road on Friday night, after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a black cow.
There were no witnesses to the accident, but the Kansas Highway Patrol believes the incident happened because of poor visibility. James Zordel, the 59-year-old motorcyclist, was riding on a paved rural road, which was blacktopped.
Thus, the road surface was black, and some believe his visibility was affected because of this situation. We might add that many of the world’s roads are blacktopped, so this might not be such a big safety concern.
The unfortunate event happened at night, impairing visibility even further. Zordel’s bad luck reached a peak when a black cow entered the road in front of his motorcycle. The impact with the cow proved fatal to the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet. James Zordel died at the scene of the accident, ABC News reports.
The incident occurred near Russell, Kansas, on a road that is six miles (9.65 km) south of Interstate 70. Investigators are trying to conclude if the motorcyclist was speeding at the time of the crash, or if the cow appeared suddenly in front of the rider. A combination of the two factors is not excluded.
Kansas’ highway patrol representatives did not mention if alcohol or drugs were found in the motorcyclist’s system. Since nobody else was on the road at the time, the circumstances of the incident might not be discovered quickly, says Brant Birney, Kansas Highway Patrol trooper.
Wildlife is a danger to road users worldwide, no matter if driving on rural roads or even highways. We must also note that it would be wise always to wear safety gear whenever riding a motorcycle or a two-wheeled vehicle.
Even on a bicycle, a helmet and a pair of gloves are the least you could do to stay safe. Reflective elements are always a good idea for riders, and those that travel on dark roads should always make sure at least one piece of their clothing is reflective.
