Biker Airbags Receive the First Official Comparison Test in France

Airbag systems for motorcycle riders aren't exactly a new thing, but it's only during the past years their presence and development become truly noticeable. Now it's time to take a new step in the development of these safety systems, as France has carried out the first official tests for these safety devices.

French Securite et Reparation Automobiles (SRA) crash tested 4 airbag-equipped jackets and published the results, awarding between 1 and 5 stars, according to the overall safety they provide the rider during an accident.

The inflation time after the initial impact must be 100 milliseconds or more, in order to provide effective protection to the rider, with the jackets whose bladders become fully inflated in 80ms or less being rated as top quality.

Two of the airbag jackets the SRA tested had electronic triggers, while the other two used ripcords. Dainese's D'Air scored the best results, 5 stars for fully deploying the airbag in 45ms, followed by Bering's Portect'Air with 82ms and scoring 4 stars.

Helit's Airnest Turtle H scored 3 stars and the Allshot Airv1 got one, both using ripcords. However, it looks like timing the ripcord airbags is not exactly as precise as the one for the electronically-triggered jackets, due to constructive particularities... and early testing stage.

All in all, it's great to see that the industry is moving and these first tests are a baseline for future rider safety devices development and rating.
