Bike Crashes in Fireworks on Russian Highway

Another Watch and Learn video, another bad day for a rider and another lesson which might spare you the trouble of a wrecked bike and injuries. The story appears to happen on a Russian highway, in the higher-speed lane, and is exceptionally educational as it tells us at least two things in the first instance.

For starters, these folks are obviously not using the lanes as, say Germans would. If you travel to Germany or Austria you’ll meet a ton of “Rechts Fahren - Stress Sparen”signs. That is German for “ride to the right and spare yourself the stress”, promoting leaving the left lanes free for really high-speed traffic. And with Germany having no speed limits on most sectors of the Autobahn, you go figure things out…

The second thing teaches us that no one is safe even in the leftmost lane, and troubles can (and will) occur even there. Now, coupling this with the usually higher speeds in this lane, attention and awareness should be increased tenfold to compensate for the decreasing road safety levels.

Unfortunately, the rider following the truck was not exactly prepared to react to a traffic jam ahead causing all traffic to slow down significantly, and bit the dust. Erm, the hard asphalt of the Russian highway, that is. If you look closely, the guy brakes really late after observing that the traffic ahead is slowing down. Maybe if he spotted the danger earlier, he could have slowed down more smoothly and remain upright. As for riding on the left side of the leftmost lane, so close to the concrete wall, this is definitely not healty…
