Biaggi Takes Two Home Wins at Misano

Max Biaggi added two more wins to his tally in the 2010 World Superbike Championship, as the Aprilia rider took back-to-back wins in front of his home fans at Misano Adriatico. Biaggi therefore extended his lead in the overall classification to 37 points from second placed Leon Haslam with only 5 rounds to go.

Nevertheless, the win in the first race was no piece of cake for the Italian veteran, who had to overcome a strong early charge from BMW Motorrad Motorsport's Troy Corser for the overall victory. The Australian veteran held the lead for no less than 16 laps in Race 1, before Biaggi closed the gap on him and passed him for the lead.

Corser would eventually finish the race in 3rd place, being overtaken seconds later by Ducati's Carlos Checa. The Spaniard also made a final attempt to grab first place from Biaggi, but the Italian defended well and managed to secure his 7th win of the season. The finish was pretty spectacular though, with the Top 3 riders crossing the finish line within 0.822 seconds from each other.

Although the second race saw some impressive battles for the lead in the early laps, Biaggi would go on to secure a comfortable win at the finish line, taking the chequered flag more than 4 seconds ahead of championship rival Leon Haslam. The podium was completed by Ducati's Michel Fabrizio, who survived a late surge from Yamaha Sterilgarda' Cal Crutchlow to secure his 4th podium of the season.

In such a tough and well balanced championship, all of the victories are earned with hard work and sweat. In race 2, to be honest, maybe I rode... pushing the envelope a bit, maybe even risking too much. But on the other hand, without risk there is no gain! This race represents a crucial moment for us and for our season we are coming out with our heads held high,” said Biaggi after the double winner.

Two weeks from now, the World Superbike field will move to Brno for the 9th round of the 2010 season, a place where Biaggi recorded one win and a runner-up spot in last weekend's event.
