Since the good ol’ days of Screamer 4x4 no other video game managed to offer players a better virtual dose of forest and rock climbing. All post-Screamer off-road simulators had problems with player immersion, control and unrealistic vehicle behavior. Until Spintires showed us last year that miracles can happen.
These days, you can find a simulator for almost everything; from trains, planes and buses to road construction machinery, mining, farming and even goats. But where’s the off-road section? Everyone seems to have forgotten about this “muddy” class.
Luckily enough, Oovee Game Studios went past the dusty empty shelf where off-roading games should be and said “You know what, lets give people something they never saw so far in this section.” And that’s how the Spintires project started.
We followed it since day one, and when the studios released their first demo, we practically spent gillions of hours in it admiring textures, land deformation, suspension works, smoke and mud splashing on the vehicles.
Finally, some one came with the right ingredients for this niche segment! The developing process must have been a pain in the arse, since this is an indie game at its origins and the company had to rely on public donations to succeed. But they’ve done it now, and the game’s official site now comes with a countdown until the big release.
Ten days separate us from the mud & truck delight. The much waited game arrives on market June 13 and will cost around $30 (€22), a decent amount of money regarding the game’s content.
Spintires’ features include a vast wilderness open for exploration, realistic mud and water effects, advanced vehicle suspension works, several vehicle classes, day and night cycle, special transport missions, functional crane vehicles, winches and a high dose of replayability.
