Bernie Blaims Lack of Canadian GP on Private Financing

A few days after FIA announced the Formula 1 schedule for 2009, Bernie Ecclestone spoke out as to why he chose to axe the Canadian Grand Prix from next year's championship and leave North America without an F1 race in the upcoming season.

“America works differently. Certain worldwide events, like F1 itself in certain nations or the Olympic Games, are financed by the countries. In the American continent, by contrast, they're organized by private companies, who want to make a profit even before the race is staged: that's a bit too much”, said Bernie in an interview for Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The F1 supremo also pointed out that Singapore will remain the only night race for 2009 in Formula 1, despite rumors linking Adelaide to hosting a similar event next season.

“The Singapore GP originated from the need of making F1 visible to Europe at an acceptable time that isn't dawn. So this is a matter restricted to the Asian and Oceania races. But in 2009 it will just be Singapore. As for Europe I see no reason to stage a race after sunset”, added Ecclestone.

Also regarding F1's plans for the future, the Englishman announced the introduction of a new Indian Grand Prix in 2011 – although it was scheduled to make its championship debut a year earlier – and the possibility to add some new races to the Great Circle for the upcoming years.

“Besides Abu Dhabi, we have at least two or three options open in Russia. The first is obviously Moscow. But it isn't time to think about a date yet”, concluded Bernie.
