Bentley kept us busy with its updated Continental GT Speed at the Geneva Motor Show, but the carmaker has much more important things to think about these days. The best example is their SUV, whose development is currently going through an oil-burning phase.
Bentley Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber confirmed that the company is currently debating the possibility of fitting the SUV with a diesel engine, as explained in an interview for Autoblog.
The turning point here is based on the customer decision and the automarker needs to determine whether their clientele would approve such a move. We assure you this is more difficult than it seems - for instance, when Bentley introduced the new cylinder deactivation-gifted V8 on their Continental GT, they skipped the dashboard light showing when the unit switches to V4 mode, all due to customer preference.
Should the Brits decide to give the oil burner the green light, this would be offered as a $15,000 (EUR 20,500) option.
As for what engine could find its way under the hood of the Bentley SUV, many hope the VW Group will revive their V10 TDI. Nevertheless, the unit was retired back in 2010 and would require quite some engineering work to fit the new emission regulations.
