Bentley Mulsanne Chassis #1 Sold for 350K Euros

As we have already reported, the Grand Bentley was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this weekend, wearing the Mulsanne nameplate, and scheduled to go on sale in mid 2010.

The #1 chassis of the Mulsanne was auctioned off for around 350,000 euros ($500,000 or £300,000), which is a decent sum, considering that its price tag is expected to be in the 300,000 euros ($420,000 or £250,000) range.

The proceeds that Bentley and auction house Gooding & Company got from selling the #1 Mulsanne went to Pebble Beach's official charity, the Phil Hill Foundation, Luxist reported. Bentley CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen and Bentley Heritage Collection chief Richard Charlesworth participated from the stage in selling off the car to the highest bidder.

The Mulsanne was presented as being the first Bentley designed and produced entirely at the company's Crewe headquarters in England since the legendary 8-liter Bentley from the 1920s. Therefore, the auction house brought W.O. Bentley's own personal ride, the second 8-liter chassis ever made, onto the stage before the auctioning began, in order to attract bidders.

The bidding for Mulsanne chassis #1 was initially opened at $500,000, but there were no bids placed at that price. Therefore, Gooding dropped the minimum bidding level to $300,000 from where it climbed back up to the half-million mark.

Unfortunately, no technical details have been yet revealed, but what we do know is that it is powered by a V8 engine similar to the one of the Arnage, the car which it will replace. The new Bentley Mulsanne will also be introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month, where, as you might have guessed, it will unveil its detailed specs.
