A few months back, one of our editorials suggested Bentley should consider making a four-door coupe, like the Audi RS7 or Mercedes CLS. In that article, I said the conventional coupe fells old-fashioned and outdated, which really rubbed them the wrong way. What I really wanted and should have said is that a four-door coupe could be far more popular with the sort of customers Bentley attracts.
Today, we can share with those potential future customers an idea, a vision of what a four-door coupe loosely based on the Continental GT would look like. It was created by graphics manipulator Remco Meulendijk and, for us at least, it ticks all the right boxes: cool alloys, black chrome trim and jeweled headlights.
Around the back is where things get creative, tanks to a unique boot design and really powerful shoulder lines. Remember, this is four-door coupe, not a sedan, which means everything has to be oriented towards the sporty side. The photos almost hint at a liftback boot design, like the one on the RS7 and the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. It's a more practical approach to lading things, one which we approve of.
Of course, making an all-new Bentley takes time and money. But here's a question for you: If Porsche can take an Audi Q5 and turn it into the amazing Macan, why can't we have an even better version of the RS7? Surely, one of the most dynamic models coming out of Germany at the moment is good enough for Bentley. And after all, they already share that brilliant twin-turbo V8.
So what are the guys in Crewe up to these days? Well, they're kind of busy with that uber-luxury SUV they've got going on. It's probably even more important than our four-door coupe idea and considering how many rich folks drive €150,000 Range Rovers and Cayennes, it should sell by the bucket load. Beyond that, they're also considering a brand new entry-level sportscar, which rumors suggest would be based on the second-generation Audi R8.
