Bentley Bentayga Testing 4.0-Liter TDI Diesel Engine With Trademark V8 Exhaust

No, we're not talking about the trademark sound a V8 engine makes, but about the shape of the mufflers. It looks like the same people who made the quad system for the Conti GT V8 got involved with the Bentayga.

So anyway, three Bentleys have been spotted in the Dolomite mountains. Considering the 2,200m altitude, this is the perfect place to see if engines have any breathing problems. The two Continental on the right are old 2014 models with the W12 engine, but the Bentayga is different.

We did our own license plate check on the British Government website and found it was registered in April 2016 and comes with a 3,956cc diesel engine. That's right, this is a TDI British car, which is pretty rare.

It reminds me of that one time I found a Continental with a V6 TDI from a VW Phaeton. We got this photo from Dutch website Autoblog, who got all excited about a weld on the coupe which turned out to be tape.

Bentley has publicly admitted there will be a diesel engine in the Bentayga, but we still can't tell you when it will launch. Maybe this fall or maybe even later.

The 3,956cc displacement is identical to that of the Audi SQ7, a monster with two turbochargers. Considering it and the Bentayga share a 48V electric system, we expect there will be a complete engine swap that also includes the electric compressor.

But the output might not stay the same. As some of you might remember, the Continental GT V8 and V8 S never matched the output of the Audi RS6. So the Bentayga's TDI might only have 400 horsepower, though 900 Nm (739 lb-ft) of torque will more than compensate for it.

Something else we've noticed is that the shape of the exhaust has changed. The W12 Bentayga model has just two flat ovals, but here we see double ∞ symbols.
