MotoGP has interviewed Ignite Pamac Ducati rider Ben Spies, a noticeable absence in the 2013 season, as a consequence of his injuries.
It all began with Spies' crash in the Malaysia GP: the injury proved to be far worse than anyone thought at the moment, and his two races in the early season have been more than enough proof that he needed more time to heal.
Trying to make a comeback at Indianapolis, one of the three rounds on US soils, ill fate struck again, and Ben Spies too a fall, though not a very rough one. However, he hurt his other shoulder and had to undergo a double surgery. What was initially diagnosed as a Grade 3 separation of his shoulder, proved to be a Grade 5 one, with surgery being the only way to mend things.
Substituted by Ducati's test rider Michele Pirro when available, Spies is now replaced by PBM rider Yonny Hernandez until able to come back aboard the GP13.
More than disappointment shines through Ben's words: it's frustration. Frustration for not being able to ride, to gather points for the team, and for not making it big in front of the fans. Still a comeback is a distant dream: Spies will see a doctor this week, and only then will he learn about how he rehab will be, with the first positive results expected to show up weeks later.
Spies seems rather pessimistic about a potential comeback this season. He's quite aware that it's better to be 100% healthy for 2014 than trying once more, lacking the surehandedness essential for a fully-fit Moto GP rider.
“If we don’t come back this year that is the goal: for, next time I get on a bike, to not have a worry in the world of any setback or needing to do more rehab. So I guess that would be the only positive thing to be able to take out of it," Spies tells MotoGP.com.
As for the rumored separation between him and Ignite Pramac Ducati, Spies confirms what the Team manager Fancesco Guidotti recently said: it's a tough period with him injured, but nobody wants to put an early end to the contract.
