The world of powersports is changing for the better, or at least the helmet-related safety features are. If this is the first time you hear about 3D-scanned helmets, then you should first read the mid-April autoevolution cover story on the laser-scanned helmet designs. If the 3D scanning technology sounds familiar, then here’s the good news: Bell Helmets will introduce its first Custom-Fit Scan Vehicle in Laguna Seca this weekend, and this is only the beginning of a new era.
One of the pioneers who have invested massively in the 3D custom-fit scanning technologies, Bell Helmets is planning to take a bold step towards making this new helmet technology a more popular one, and ultimately being able to lower the production prices for the custom EPS liners. Each rider’s head has its own anatomical particularities, and finding a truly “best fit” when it comes to deciding upon a certain helmet is impossible, with even the result which are very close to the physical reality being in fact, the smallest compromise.

Well, it looks like the age of compromises is getting closer to its end, with the new custom-fit helmets becoming increasingly popular and with better availability. Those who will visit the Custom-Fit Scan Vehicle located in the Vendor Row, Booth 21 at Laguna Seca will be able to have their heads scanned for free and Bell will all their personal details in the permanent database, for any potential custom-fit helmet purchase in the future.

That is, you don’t have anything to lose, just have your head scanned and you can wait until the prices for these new-generation lids becomes lower and the order yours. So far Bell is only offering this technology for their top-of-the-line Star Carbon, but more models are expected to join it soon.

Until the custom-fit helmet range grows, Bell will be on a nationwide tour with its Custom-Fit Scan Vehicle for the remainder of 2014 and in 2015, with multiple motocross and road racing events in the calendar. More than 20 such occasions are already scheduled for 2014. Meet and greet, autograph sessions and photos with various Bell-endorsed athletes and racers are also on the menu during these events, in the Bell booth.
