Bell Expands Custom-Fit Program with Moto-9 Helmet, More Dates Announced

Bell is taking its Custom-Fit program further with the addition of new dates for future bike shows and sporting events where riders will be able to have their heads scanned prior to ordering their personalized helmets. The project only included the Bell Star Carbon full-face helmet initially, but a second model has been added to the Custom-Fit line-up. Riders who like off-roading more than asphalt aggression can chose the Moto-9, a lightweight carbon premium lid, as well.

We reported earlier about Bell’s revolutionary program, which involves laser-scanning a rider’s head to obtain an accurate shape which will serve as a guideline in the manufacturing of the EPS inner shell. This ensures a very accurate reproduction of the rider’s head shape, which in turn translates to superior wearing comfort and enhanced protection.

The shape of the inner liner is one of the key elements

A helmet protects the rider’s head during an impact by absorbing and dissipating the shock energy in the EPS liner and the outer shell. This way, only a fraction of the energy reaches the rider’s skull and the damage potential is significantly reduced. However, this is only the ideal way things work, because the surface of the contact area between the EPS liner and the head has a major role to play in this.

In other words, when the contact patch is larger, the pressure is lower and the shock is more evenly distributed. If the opposite happens, the energy transfer takes place through a small area and this means more pressure and a bigger shock, with potentially destructive consequences.

Even more, in case the helmet is too loose it could rotate and provide significantly less protection in case of a crash. If the helmet is too small, it will be extremely uncomfortable to wear, causing pain even in normal riding conditions. The Custom-Fit Bell shapes takes care of all the problems, as the shape inside the Star Carbon or Moto-9 helmets accurately replicates that of the rider’s head, eliminating the loose feel or pressure points, with its ergonomic design increasing protection and maximizing wearing comfort to the point where the lid “ceases to exist.” Of course, we’re referring to the rider’s perception of wearing a helmet.

So far you have three upcoming events where the Bell Custom-Fit scanner will be present, as the photo below shows. More dates will of course, be made available soon. Ohio, Minnesota and Illinois are the next states where Bell offers scans. Make sure you check with their website for more info and orders.
