In 2016, Bentley became one of the first luxury carmakers to bend the knee to the mighty SUV and launch its own dedicated nameplate into the segment, the Bentayga. The move proved to be a stroke of genius, as the model became one of the best sellers in the history of the brand.
In the first week of June 2020, about four years after the model was first shown, the British carmaker announced an important milestone: its employees rolled off the assembly lines in Crewe the Bentayga no. 20,000. That means the brand sold on average 5,000 of these SUVs per year since it was introduced.

As all other Bentleys, every single one of the Bentaygas was assembled by hand, and each required 100 hours of work performed by a team of 230 people. Four years into the production of the SUV, the available roster includes five variants and four powertrains, including a hybrid one.

Bentley calls the development program for the SUV “the most exhaustive in the Bentley brand’s history.” That was in part due to the launch of the Bentayga hybrid. Its introduction marked an important moment for the carmaker, as it represented its first steps into the world of electrification.

But it is the Speed variant that is the carmaker’s most cherished possession. Aside from being extremely luxurious, the Speed is presently the fastest production SUV on the planet, with a claimed top speed of 190 mph (306 kph) and an acceleration time rated at 3.9 seconds.

Sure, for some people the Bentayga might not be the best looking SUV wearing the badge of a niche or luxury carmaker. Its platform brother, the Lamborghini Urus, or the more recent Aston Martin DBX are more suitable for this title, but given how many of Bentley’s SUVs were made over the past four years, looks seem not to be everything for luxury buyers.
