The cool sand stormer that Volkswagen presented at this year's Detroit Auto Show might go into production, a recent report says. Called the Beetle Dune, the concept is based on a Beetle Turbo model and comes with raised suspension, black body armor and beefy tires.
This thing is cool, so cool in fact that people might actually buy it, despite it not making that much sense. After all, if you want a crossover vehicle, why have it based on a small, quirky retro coupe.
The Beetle dune was built as a production-ready concept and "shows the potential for a new production version of the sportiest Beetle ever." The response of potential customers will be measured by looking into what people say at the still ongoing Detroit Auto Show.
This isn't actually the first time Volkswagen has played with the idea of a Baja Bug. Back in 2000, they unveiled another concept which was based on the same idea and even had the same name. However, it never entered production.
If the Dune is approved, it will be interesting to see if the Germans will try to adapt the old Golf 6 platform which underpins the Beetle for all-wheel drive.
