Beau Yates Drift Toyota GT 86 Gets Ready for New Round

Taking over from the famous 1984 Toyota AE 86 in which he has competed since 2004, Beau Yates’ heavy modified GT 86 is coming closer to its competition debut at round two of the Australian Drifting Grand Prix.

Despite the heavy modifications, Yates explained that he tried to retain as much as possible of the elements that make the road-going 86 an enjoyable vehicle.

"Retaining the factory engine is a key aspect of the build, because a lot of people have modified 86s with aftermarket motors - six-cylinders or V8s," Yates said. "But Toyota knows how to engineer a car, and when you switch to a heavier engine you upset the balance. The stock engine is lightweight, has a low centre of gravity, is efficient and has proven it can produce a lot of power."

The mods list include sleeved block, forged pistons, a Garrett 3076GTX turbocharger ramping up the power to 346 kW, Motec M150 engine control unit, six-speed sequential gearbox, modified steering rack, BC Racing coilover suspension, hydraulic handbrake, a Rocket Bunny body kit, a GD Racecars custom roll cage and more.
