A hungry bear won’t care if you drive a cheap car or a pricier one. A hungry bear will only care if you lock your doors, which is precisely what the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office is urging all drivers to remember.
The latest incident involving a Honda Civic, in South Lake Tahoe, is proof of that. A bear came rummaging for snacks and ended up inside the vehicle, which it probably trashed when it panicked because it couldn’t get out.
The owner of the car called the police and the officer used several rounds on his beanbag gun to break the back window, and thus offer the bear a clear way out. The Sheriff’s Office posted the video to the official Facebook page, along with a warning to all drivers and car-owners: this is what happens when you leave your doors unlocked and food inside the car.
“Yes... bears can open doors,” the caption to the video reads. “A reminder from EDSO to leave your vehicle's locked and remove ALL food from inside, especially in bear country. It was much safer for the Sgt... and the bear, to access the vehicle this way.”
This isn’t the first time authorities have made public footage of such bear rescue operations to highlight what can happen if drivers don’t remember these 2 simple rules. Just recently, a bear destroyed a Subaru in Colorado after becoming trapped inside, as it went looking for food.
On that particular instance, cops used a string to pull open the door on the driver’s side and let the bear out. It was so scared that it ripped the interior of the car to pieces, as it looked for a way out. Better keep that in mind before thinking it’s ok to leave your car unlocked since there are no thieves in the woods.
