MX-5, Miata, Eunos Roadster, whatever you want to call it, the lightweight roadster from Mazda is a spirited driver's delight. Its mechanical simplicity and enjoyable front-engined rear-wheel drive layout hits any driver's sweet spot, so it's not wonder why it has become the world's best-selling two-seat convertible sports car in just 25 years since it was launched.
Like any other automobile, the MX-5 also has its fair share of faults, chief among which is the lack of grunt. The most powerful engine in the range is a 2-liter naturally aspirated MZR inline four-pot with 160 horsepower on tap. So what can you do in order to increase the HP on this quirky little sport car without resorting to turbocharging or supercharging?

British performance tuner BBR has an answer to that - the Super 200 package. Priced at just £2,195 ($3,682 or €2,745) including labor costs, this pack offers a power hike of 43 ponies and 19 lb-ft (25 Nm). Dyno testing tells that 180 horsepower out of the total 200 are delivered to the rear wheels, which is great news for those owners that want a little bit of on demand opposite lock slippin' and slidin'. If you have a wrench and a hammer, a DIY variant of the BBR Super 200 pack is also available for £1,695.

The BBR Super 200 upgrade for the Mazda MX-5 (NC) consists of the following components:

  • BBR high flow panel air filter
  • BBR stainless steel 4 into 1 exhaust manifold
  • BBR high performance intake and exhaust camshafts
  • BBR 3.5 inch diameter branded tailpipes with stainless steel clamps
  • BBR ECU remap
  • BBR badges for front wings and bootlid

“BBR knows that the Mazda MX-5 owners community is a broad church and not everyone wanted the supercar style performance of our highly successful turbocharged upgrades,” says BBR-GTI’s Neil McKay. “Therefore we decided to develop a package that built upon our entry level Super 175 and 180 upgrades by incorporating exclusive BBR hardware and further electronic development to deliver the first genuine 200 bhp normally aspirated conversion to an eager Mazda performance aftermarket, whilst being designed for everyday use and offering exceptional value for money."
