BBR's Latest Kit For Mazda MX-5 2.0 Cuts 1.65 Seconds From 0-60 MPH Time

The Mazda MX-5 Miata was never a car that was built with outright power in mind. Instead, it was all about handling and driving feel.

Nothing much has changed with the ND MX-5, the latest generation of the Japanese roadster. It has become lighter than its predecessor, but the most powerful engine in the range provides 160 HP as standard.

It is more than enough for most, but some want extra performance, so they call tuners for help. BBR, a British specialist, has announced a new package for the legendary Japanese roadster.

The tuner from Brackley, Northamptonshire, has announced the completion of a package named “Super 200,” as well as an upgraded version called “Super 200+.”

Just like the title says, the packages bring the power of Mazda’s MX-5 to 200 HP and above, but only for the 2.0-liter engine version, which is more than enough if you ask us.

Before we get into details, the tuning kit does not affect the electronic safety elements of the Mazda MX-5, and its application maintains MOT emissions compliance and standard idle characteristics. This means that the resulting cars will remain street legal without a hitch.

Now, back to the package, which has taken some time to develop. The first offer, the Super 200 from BBR, provides a power bump of 45 HP, up to 205 HP, an output that is reached at 6,950 rpm.

Moreover, the tuners say that their upgrades will make the MX-5’s 2.0-liter engine “rev happy,” as it will “excel above 5,500 rpm,” and provide intense performance.

Peak torque also rises, achieving 179 lb-ft (242 NM) at 4,950 rpm, 26 lb-ft (35 Nm) on top of the standard model. Another significant gain is a 1.65-second improvement of the 0-60 mph acceleration time, which has dropped to 5.65 seconds according to BBR. Contrary to expectation, the kit retains the naturally aspirated configuration.

The tuners at BBR say that the kit consists of a billet steel intake, new intake and exhausts camshafts, upgraded valve springs and retainers, custom stainless steel exhaust manifold, and a dedicated cold air intake system.

All the mechanical mods are put to use with the StarChip ECU, which features revised settings for fuel, cam timing, and ignition, so that performance is optimized while the Mazda OEM fail safes and features are retained.

The Super 200 package from BBR costs 2,795 pounds including installation and dyno power graph. There’s a DIY version, which is priced at 2,195 pounds. However, there’s more.

The tuners at BBR offer a kit named Super 200+, which provides more performance, which can deliver up to 214 HP and 183 lb-ft of torque (248 Nm). It comes from an improved exhaust system, available with two silencer options, along with a “Super Sport” version. The exhausts start at 400 pounds.

The most extreme package is bespoke, and can provide over 225 HP from the MX-5’s 2.0-liter gasoline engine. It involves a reworked cylinder head, which must be customized with a flow bench for maximum performance.

Price is provided on each application. BBR has a broad range of other upgrades for the ND Mazda MX-5, including suspension and braking components.
