Since summer is just around the corner, the Autobild team decided to compare two hip convertibles, perfect for a day at the beach : the MINI Cooper and the Volkswagen Beetle.
The MINI Convertible as already a classic Convertible, even though it was released just 8 years ago, compared to the Beetle's legacy of over 60 years. Of course, modern-day cars are completely different.
What turned the MINI into a modern-day classic Convertible was the design that was inspired by the initial Classic car from the 60s. Keeping true to its DNA, customers loved the fact that they could enjoy the wind blowing in their hair in a car that stayed true to its origins.
The Beetle is a legend. Anyone that ever wanted or drove a convertible knows how the Beetle feels like and performs. The current model is no different from its predecessors, it's the same hot convertible, with a touch of modern technologies.
In the roof-retracting contest, the Beetle won in a commanding manner, with a lead of over 6 seconds, finishing in 9 seconds whilst the MINI did it in 15. However there are certain area where the MINI is better.
The overall feel of the car takes you back to the 60s. It's conservative design and styling takes you back to the time when everything seemed more relaxed and laid back. Also, the MINI is more compact, somewhat of a box, that fits your every need while also occupying the slightest amount of space.
Overall the king remains the king. The Beetle beats the MINI and goes home with the title but that is not even a bad thing for the British model. Considering that the Beetle has over 6 decades of experience in the field and managed to win the hearts of millions of people over the world in its impressive life-span and that this is MINI's first attempt at building a Convertible, things are looking up for the contender.
