Basic 2020 Audi Q7 Facelift Looks Like This, Is Still Understated

After over a decade on the market, Audi finally replaced the first-generation Q7 SUV in 2015. The design was much-improved but wasn't well received. The media had already seen the sexy design language of the Prologue, but Marc Lichte arrived too late to do anything for the large Q model.

So was he able to do a better job for the facelift? No. It's not a case of form follows function, as with the A6, and the update feels like a bunch of features from the flagship Q8 were forced down the Q7's thought.

However, it's worth knowing that the Matador Red model they showed a couple of weeks ago isn't the standard 2020 Audi Q7. It had the optional S line package, probably in combination with the Black Edition or Vorsprung editions. We believe the majority of Q7 buyers, who have large families, won't be interested, which is why we're showing the first photos of the base model.

As you can probably tell, the normal model has smaller intakes and black plastic cladding instead of the dark silver saw on the S line. The design of the rear bumper is different as well, lacking those fake exhaust-shaped trims. But the dark tint for the LED taillights is retained, and the Matrix Laser projectors have been fitted to this particular model, though you obviously don't need it.

Inside, the S line package would add sportier seat trim, aluminum pedals and a D-shaped steering wheel, though obviously none of that is necessary. For the first time, the Q7 is going to be available in Britain with a petrol engine, which is why we see a 55 TFSI unit on the red S line SUV instead of the 50 TDI.

All units now come with a 48V mild-hybrid system, which stops the engine even at speed and can recuperate some of the lost energy. Strangely, the 48V battery and DC converter are right next to the exhaust while a 12V battery locates itself under the front passenger. Another less talked about feature is the air suspension, which is now standard. Comfort was already the best feature of the Q7, and it's nice to see Audi paying attention to its customers' needs.
