Baja 1000 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Revealed: to Compete in Full Size Stock Class

The Toyota Tundra is a great light truck that's very popular with younger buyers. Recently, it got a little bit better, thanks to the introduction of TRD performance parts that add curb appeal and dynamics. The Japanese automaker is now hoping to put the truck and those custom parts to the ultimate test of toughness by competing in the famous Baja race.

Set to compete in the Full Size Stock Class, this 2015 Tundra TRD Pro features only light modifications. Power comes from a 5.7-liter V8 engine that's been fitted with a new cold air intake and sports cat back exhaust system, pushing the output to around 400 horsepower.

Body modifications include off-road suspension, a Chromoly roll cage and 17-inch wheels wrapped in beefy 37-inch Baja T/A KR tires. To help the drives see better, LED Rally 4000 lights from Hella were installed on the front and the side mirrors.

“My job is to ensure that the Tundra exceeds the expectations and demands of every single one of its owners,” said Sweers, Chief Engineer of Toyota Pickup Trucks. “With over 1,000 miles of harsh terrain, The Baja 1000 is the ultimate proving grounds for research and development that helps us to continuously improve our trucks.”

The lightly modified Tundra TRD truck will compete in the Baja 1000 between November 12-16 in Ensenada, Mexico. It will be piloted by Ted Moncure, Andy Bell, Jamie Bestwick and Ryan Millen, with Toyota Trucks Chief Engineer Mike Sweers also acting as navigator.

“Competing in the Full Size Stock class allows our team to test the Tundra TRD Pro as close to stock as possible and showcase its strength and durability in the Mexican desert’s treacherous terrain,”
said Andrew Franceschini, Toyota truck marketing and communications national manager. “Our goal is to finish this grueling race and to showcase just how awesome the new TRD Pro Series trucks are.”
