Bahrain Protesters Point Fingers at F1 Race

The chances of seeing the Formula 1 field in Bahrain next month have dropped significantly in the past few days, with the teams and Bernie Ecclestone to make a final decision on the prospect of dropping off the race later today.

Until then however, the latest report from the Kingdom suggests that the anti-government protesters have every intention of using the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix, due to take place near the city of Manama, on the Bahrain International Circuit, to make their cause heard worldwide. And according to one protester, there is a big link between the race and the recent uprising in the country.

The race has been the prince's dream since he was a child,” said Hasan Dhani, a 23-year-old protester, according to planetf1.com. “He wants to negotiate so he can fulfill this dream, and it makes me sad that his dream is more dear to him than the needs of his people.”

There is a big connection between (the uprising) and Formula 1,” he added, while suggesting that if the F1 race will be held, it will be an insult to the recent victims of the political turmoil in the last few weeks.

Several died and hundreds were injured in Bahrain during the past few weeks, as a result of constant clashes between the local police and anti-government protesters. The starting point for the political unrest lies in the Shiite population wanting to have more access to the nation's decision-making process, currently controlled by the Sunni royal family.

The most recent "meeting" between the local force and Shiite protesters took place mid-way through last week, in the very city of Manama, where at least 3 were killed and several were injured. As a consequence, the GP2 Asia Series round was cancelled by FIA.
