One woman from Lynn, Massachusetts was in bed when someone crashed into her son’s parked car. She heard the bang but, instead of freaking out and freezing, she jumped out of bed and into her own car, giving chase to the bad guy.
Supermom to the rescue! The crash happened around midnight and was captured on the home surveillance camera, CBS 4 Boston reports. A work pickup truck is seen smashing on the Toyota Corolla parked on the side of the street with such force as to send it forward for about 20 feet. The damage to the rear of the car was extensive, and the car has been written off because of it.
The Corolla belonged to Daniel, Maria Donator’s son. When Maria heard the bang, she jumped out of bed and saw the truck speeding away. She wasn’t about to let some random guy have his way with her son’s car and then just leave, so she jumped into her own car, while she instructed Daniel to call 911.
Maria followed the suspect for about 2 miles, while on the phone with the police, giving them her whereabouts. Because she kept her distance and reported back constantly, she was never in any real danger and the Lynn PD commends her for that. However, they advise citizens against doing what she did.
Still, Maria says she would have followed the bad guy even if he had a gun. “I didn’t care if he had a gun or anything on him,” she says for the media outlet. “I was going to chase him.” She won’t let anyone mess with her kids and would do this again, if the situation arises.
Lynn Police Lieutenant Michael Kmiec says the appropriate response for any civilian is to call 911 right away and stay put, out of harm’s way. Maria did good, but someone else doing the same might not have the kind of luck she had in the chase.
“Certainly, not something we recommend to the general public,” Lt. Kmiec says. “She did a good job getting the officers informed of where she was, so they were able to find him and put the suspect in custody.”
23-year-old Jayron Chilel-Dionicio was arrested in relation to the hit and run and charged with driving without a license and leaving the scene of a crash. He also had an open container in the car, and police suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident.
