Baby Bronco To Be Called Bronco Sport, 2021 Ford Bronco To Premiere Next Month

Jeep has the Compass Trailhawk and Wrangler Rubicon, Ford plans to get back at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with the Bronco Sport and Bronco. The bigger of the two utility vehicles is supposed to premiere in the second half of November according to unnamed sources, which leads us to think that TFLnow is referring to the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show.

On the downside for prospective customers and enthusiasts, Ford denied such a reveal and the timeframe mentioned beforehand. What is clear, however, is that Bronco Sport sounds better than Baby Bronco, Scout, Outer Banks, and whatever trademarks you can come up with. Based on the C2 vehicle architecture of the Escape, the lil’ fellow is a unibody featuring a transverse engine, all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic tranny.

Test mules reveal a far boxier silhouette than the Escape, aligning the Bronco Sport to how the exterior design of the Wrangler-rivaling model. Given the C2 platform, it's possible for the Ford Motor Company to share the Escape’s engine options with the off-roader. The powertrains list starts with a three-cylinder EcoBoost 1.5-liter engine rated at 180 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Given time, a hybrid and plug-in hybrid could also be offered.

As for the mid-size Bronco with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo and 10R80 automatic transmission from the Ranger pickup truck, TFLnow reports that “two-door and four-door versions” will be available. That sounds interesting if you remember the Wrangler is available in those body styles, but so far, there’s no confirmation about it from the Ford Motor Company.

Going through a load of patents filed with the USPTO, the 2021 Ford Bronco is expected with removable doors, storage for those doors in the rear cargo area, and a few roof options. The most likely layout is a removable hardtop, but the Blue Oval has also trademarked a retractable canvas roof resembling the Jeep-designed Sunrider soft top. Last, but certainly not least, there’s a patent for a winch at the front of the body-on-frame utility vehicle.
