After months of (maybe) waiting and also leaving prospecting buyers to wait, Mercedes-Benz USA finally revealed the starting price of their first ever production electric car, the B-Class Electric Drive.
When it reaches US dealerships in the middle of the upcoming summer, the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will be $41,450, before any federal or state incentives and without the Destination and Handling fee.
This would make it exactly $100 more expensive than the BMW i3, the car which will probably be its number one rival when it comes to sales numbers.
To quote Dieter Zetsche, the B-Class Electric Drive comes with “Tesla inside” technology and is essentially an existing Mercedes-Benz B-Class (W246) that has been converted to run on electricity instead of gasoline or diesel.
Its electric motor develops 177 hp and 340 Nm (251 lb ft) of torque, which is more than able to pull the model from naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a reasonable 7.9 seconds, while underneath the passenger area sits a lithium-ion battery that can be charged to offer a range of 60 miles in less than two hours from a 240V outlet.
The total real-world EPA range offered by the 28 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is apparently 85 miles, while the top speed is electronically-limited to 160 km/h (100 mph).
Since the model is based on an existing compact MPV from the European lineup, the B-Class Electric Drive offers an interior and luggage compartment space that rivals that of a midsize sedan, but the somewhat odd looks might not appeal to most Americans, so we will just have to wait and see how it stacks up against the BMW i3.
