"We're always looking to broaden our customer base, but earning large re-orders from customers like FedEx Express is sometimes even more rewarding," Scott Harrison, Azure Dynamics CEO said in a release.
"FedEx is an incredibly astute fleet operation with 274 hybrid electric and electric vehicles among its 1,800 alternative fuel vehicles. The fact that the performance of our vehicles has met their rigorous demands and encouraged this additional large order is particularly gratifying."
The vans will be purchased by FedEx with the help of a New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) grant, whose value was not disclosed.
"FedEx now operates seven different hybrid or electric truck models around the globe, demonstrating that commercial delivery vans can reduce pollution and increase efficiency without any sacrifice in performance and durability," John Formisano, FedEx vice president added.
Back in August, Azure announced a similar agreement with the United States Postal Service (USPS). The trucks provided for the operator of the largest civilian fleet in the world are Ford E-450 chassis with a Morgan Olson body, fitted with an Azure Dynamics hybrid electric drive train.
The hybrid system comprises of a conventional 5.4l Triton gasoline engine, paired with a 5-speed automatic TorqShift transmission, an electric-launch assist, engine-off at idle and regenerative braking.
