Ayrton is best remembered for his years with the McLaren-Honda outfit and his legendary rivalry with Alain Prost, but few fans look back at Ayrton Senna’s performances with Lotus and the first F1 team he raced for - Toleman Motorsport. Today we’ll talk about the three-time world champion’s first racecar - the turbocharged Toleman TG183B from 1984.

But first, a little background info. Toleman was a small F1 team from the UK, with limited money and manpower, which raced in 70 Grand Prix events from 1981 and 1985. Nevertheless, the plucky Brits managed two fastest laps and one pole position throughout its 5-year stint in Formula 1.

The Toleman TG183B then. Throughout Senna’s first season in Formula 1, the Hart 415T 1.5-liter turbo-fed single seater enabled Ayrton to finish second at Monaco and third in Great Britain and Portugal.

To boot, the Brazilian also managed to drop a fastest lap at the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, which is an astounding feat considering he did it in a slouch of a car compared to Alain Prost’s McLaren-TAG MP4/2.

What you can admire in the photo gallery below is Chassis No. 5

This very car made its debut at the Grand Premio do Brazil in Rio De Janeiro. After that, Senna & Toleman went on to race the car at the first 4 rounds of the 1984 season including Kyalami where Senna finished a credible sixth, scoring his first World Championship point. This was followed by Zolder where Senna finished seventh. Ayrton Senna’s final race with TG183B Chassis No.5 was at the San Marino Grand Prix.

And good golly, this museum piece is for sale! Currently in the inventory of Cars International, the Toleman single seater is offered with a Hart Turbo engine, complete with a spare block from Toleman and full documentation showing unbroken history since it left the Toleman Motorsport team.

Don’t ask about the price. If you really want to find that out, then you'd better e-mail Cars International.
