Automotive Flops of 2011: Chevy Volt, Fiat 500

With only a coupe of days in the year, it’s now time to look at the bad and the worst for 2011. 24/7 Wall Street is being quoted as saying by Yahoo Finance that the two biggest underwhelmers of 2011 are the Chevy Volt and the Fiat 500.
Both are on the list of bad product launches in 2011 because they underperformed compared to expectations, but also for reasons to do with safety. The problem with the volt is that while we do believe sales will pick up eventually, the EV market has been grossly overestimated, even by GM. What’s more, the car might face a recall due to a potential fire hazard.

As for the Fiat 500, that was launched onto the US market without the proper dealer network in place. As a result of poor demand and marketing as well, about Fiat is selling less than a third of what they expected. We’d also mention the 3-star crash test rating as being a potential pitfall.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
