autoevolution Users See BMW Z4 as European Car of the Year

It has been a while since our last poll, a long while actually, but we say it was worth the wait as we have some interesting results to discuss. The idea behind the poll was to see our visitor's preferences when it comes to the upcoming 2010 European Car of the Year awards. As you know, the voting behind this European prize is done by journalists, so another view on the whole matter is nothing but a breath of fresh motorized air.

Probably the most important conclusion of our poll was that German cars appear to be favorite among users and, of course, drivers. Regardless of the body style, be it roadster, sedan or small compact, the Germans ranked highest. If your brain works better with figures than just with plain words, know that every German car manufacturer got at least 5% of the votes. Unfortunately for all the other brands, French, Japanese, American or Korean, the 5% threshold was way too difficult to cross.

So now, it's time to unveil what autoevolution readers, that's you, see as the 2010 European Car of the Year. Drum rolls please... it's Bavarian, it's extremely sporty and it's a roadster. It's the BMW Z4, with 13% of the votes. Surprising, isn't it? Not exactly your eco-friendly, urban vehicle.

The second most popular option on the list is equally shocking as it doesn't fit in any of the above categories. At least it's a bit more practical than the Z4. Say hello to the Mercedes Benz E Klasse with 11% of the votes.

The third place is occupied by the latest Volkswagen Polo with 7% of the votes, followed closely (6%) by a completely different vehicle, the recently launched Porsche Panamera. The last German manufacturer, though owned by GM, on the list is Opel/Vauxhall with their new Astra.

Two noteworthy Japanese cars that almost reached the threshold are Nissan 370Z and Mazda3, both with 4%. Apart from these, the rest only managed to gather up to three percent, with three rather “embarrassing” exceptions: Toyota Verso, Suzuki Alto/Nissan Pixo and Nissan Cube. Apparently, they didn’t manage to attract any interest at all.
