Autoevolution Poll Shares Apocalyptic Vision: GM Will Go Bankrupt

Things are not looking good for the once sales leader in the automotive world and our readers seem to think the same. Following the numerous reports last week concerning General Motors and the bleak Chapter 11 bankruptcy law, we decided to find out what our users thought about it, so asked them this “Will General Motors make it through the summer outside Chapter 11?”

The verdict? Gruesome. But first, let's check out the other two options in our three-way poll. Sixteen percent of our respondents made fun of the American company and chose “What's that? A general called Motors?”. We don't blame them. After all, GM could soon be history.

Twenty-three percent saw light at the end the economic crisis tunnel and answered that “Yes, they will do it out of court.”

And now, for the gruesome part. A whopping 60% of the users saw bankruptcy as “the only way” for the once grandiose US manufacturer.

If you recall, the first nail in GM's coffin was hammered by the US Treasury Department on April 12, as it told General Motors to prepare for Chapter 11 filling by June 1, the date when the new deadline set by the US government comes to an end. The company yesterday issued a press release with the new survival plan to be submitted to the US government. The star of the plan was Pontiac, which will be no more. Dealerships will feel the wrath of GM as well as the dying giant will slash 2,641 of them across the US. Probably the biggest casualty of them all is the workforce, which will be reduced from 61,000 in 2008 to 40,000 in 2010 and to 38,000 in 2011.

If you are a poll fan and want to express your opinion in any possible matter, be sure to check out our homepage (left side, after a bit of scrolling down) for the latest debate. The next issue we have prepared for you concerns the latest proposal in Norway to ban gasoline cars. What's your opinion? Do you think this is the way to go?
