Where there’s a will, there’s a way and two guys from India are willing to prove the saying is true by traveling from Bangalore to London, in the United Kingdom, using only an electric tuk tuk.
The tuk tuk is just another name for those auto rickshaws used throughout south Asia to carry people and goods around. They usually come fitted with a small, noisy and polluting gasoline or CNG engine.
Sitting in the traffic one day, Naveen Rabelli and Raoul Kopacka realized how wonderful their city would be if all those tuk tuks were electric-powered. Their idea soon started to take shape, as they grabbed a standard old Piaggio motorized rickshaw and turned it into an electric one.
The finished three-wheeler looks identical to a normal one, with the only giveaway of its nature being the four solar panels mounted on top and on the sides. They fitted it with an electric motor having the same power as the former gasoline one - 5kW- wanting to keep the vehicle’s characteristics untouched.
Power comes from batteries which can be recharged by plugging them to the grid or by those solar panels on the vehicle. On a full charge, they can go as far as 85 km (53 miles). Which is still amazing, judging by the fact that the whole car has been built under the blue sky, without a proper garage or necessary tools, as you’ll see in the video bellow.
The two guys will go on a journey, traveling through 10 countries in order to reach London in 100 days according to their calculus. Now that’s the definition of not having range anxiety.
