Australian Senator Proposes Motorist-Set Speed Limits

When it comes to speed limits, there have always been contradictions and people that find them absurd while others find them acceptable. Still, there are certain people that believe a new system would certainly improve one’s driving experience.

One of these people is Liberal Democratic Party Senator David Leyonhjelm. He is the former chairman of the NSW Shooters Party and a man that considers that Australian states should change the existing speed limits with those set, not by “anonymous unelected bureaucrats,” but by motorists.

The method he so dearly supports is that of the 85th percentile. It is based on the assumption that no reasonable driver wants to crash, therefore speed limits should be reset based on the monitored speeds of 85 per cent of drivers in designated ares where there is no speed limit. Along with this plan, he also proposes to remove some of the 40km/h zones.

Besides this, Leyonhjelm stated that motorists shouldn’t be treated like “sinful children and a source of revenue” as the majority of people would certainly travel at 140km/h on freeways if speed limits were removed and that the only way not to have people injured in car crashes would be to reduce speeds “ to about 20km/h.” But, we all know tsomething like this is definitely not acceptable.

Of course the proposal wasn’t too well received, a spokesperson from the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development saying that their National Road Safety Strategy actually worked and road deaths have decreased by 16 per cent.

Whether or not Leyonhjelm’s out-of-the-box idea would work or nor, we still think it is something to think about as he does point out some interesting things.
