Man, these Aussies have the greatest sense of humor in the world. We wouldn't go with such news regularly. But it was not the fact that the Australian Federal Police had this big case in which three criminals lost all of their assets for fraud, but the way they announced it on Facebook that had our attention.
Three men have been charged for their alleged involvement in a large-scale fraud scheme estimated to have taken millions from individuals and government agencies. The raid happened Wednesday, in Melbourne, and was named Operation Aristotle. It’s a joint investigation by the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Border Force and the Australian Skills Quality Authority, in cooperation with Australia Post.
This is serious, about A$8.5 million worth serious. That is the value of the assets that allegedly have been derived from the proceeds of crime, including bank accounts, a 2014 Ferrari 458 and six properties in the Melbourne.
Among the luxury items police have seized, there’s also a 2015 Ranger Rover, several luxury watches, and jewelry, as well as cash totaling more than A$118,000.
Sure, the story goes a lot deeper, but we’re not here to talk about the case, nor are we talking about the cars these criminals bought with the money the stole. In fact, our story comes with a rather ludicrous factor that relates to how they announced the case on the social network.
“Goodbye, Ferrari. Goodbye, house. Goodbye life of luxury.” That’s the title of the official announcement, which also comes with the visuals of the operation.
On the other hand, it appears that the men created fraudulent documents and visa applications for students, then illegally employed them as contractors for the labour-hire business they owned. In other words, it’s quite a dangerous situation, which may not have room for laughter. We still find it kind of funny, though.
