Australian GP Organizers Bring Pit Lane Speed to 60 kph

The 2010 Australian Grand Prix will present the drivers with yet another new rule, this time linked with pit lane speed. According to a statement from the Aussie organizers, the speed limit in the pit lane for both the Saturday qualifying session and Sunday race has been lowered to no less than 60 km/h (approximately 37 mph).

Until now, the speed limit in the pit lane was around 100 km/h (62 mph), not only in Australia, but through the majority of the venues that currently host F1 races. The reason why the Aussie organizers proceeded to this change was because the FIA delegate Charlie Whiting had asked them to, based on safety reasons.

Just as in Bahrain, however, the move will probably not affect the qualy & race running too much, as the teams will most likely opt for a single pit stop strategy during the race (as the temperatures in Melbourne are expected to be lower than the ones encountered in Bahrain).

As reported to you yesterday, the Melbourne officials have also proceeded in doing some slight changes trackwise, as followed:

A new combination kerb has been installed on the apex of turn 9. The kerbs and artificial grass have been extended downstream on the exit of turns 2 and 12,” said the FIA press release.

In the meantime, the starting hour of the Sunday race has not been brought earlier in the day – as all the drivers would have wanted it – in order to boost the European audiences of the race.
