Australian Army to Receive Custom, Rugged Mercedes G-Klasse Vehicles

If you’re in the market for a true off-roader these days, you don’t have to many choices, as many of the vehicles have gone dowm the SUV or the Crossover road, being adapted to better cater for on-road use. One of the vehicles that still manages to keep a true rugged spirit is the Mercedes-Benz G-Klasse.

And if you really want to go for an extreme G-Klasse, you’ll have to join the army. Let us explain. Mercedes’ Austrian production facility has now debuted the full production of G-Klasse Wagon models that will be delivered to the Australian Defence Force.

At the same time, Australian-based G.H. Varley of Newcastle has started the production of modules that will be fitted to the G-Wagons subsequent to the delivery to the Army. The company uses a stand-alone facility that features state of the art production management techniques such as “Lean Manufacturing”.

The German automaker will deliver 1,200 special G-Wagons to the Australian Defence Force, starting from early next year, with the contract running over the next three years. The models include Canine, Cargo, Command Post and Ambulance cars.

"The commencement of production of both modules and vehicles marks the conclusion of a two year design and test process conducted by Mercedes-Benz and Defence Material Organisation. This included an Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force evaluation designed to simulate typical military conditions, including driving at night using night-vision goggles and use of RAAF guard dogs," stated the press release.
