Australia Still Gets RHD Camaro

Remember we told you a few days ago that plans for a right-hand drive version of the Camaro have been put on hold due to a change of priorities within GM? If you live in Australia, you’re in luck. GM’s decision will not affect Performax’s plans to import, modify and sell RHD Camaros Down Under. If anything, they should be glad that they no longer have competitors.

At first, the company will start selling the range-topping 2SS variant with a LS3 6.2-litre V8 producing 426 HP (318 kiloWatts). The car has a six-speed manual transmission and a comprehensive luxury package, and is priced at Au $135,000, excluding government and on-road charges.

"Media and customer interest in the Performax-engineered RHD Camaro has been tremendous since we launched it recently," said Performax International General Manager Glenn Soper. "Performax International was first in Australia with the Camaro and we have achieved factory-standard engineering and finish quality in producing right-hand drive versions. Whatever any other importer decides to do or not do, Performax is proud to have the first and best RHD Camaros and we expect plenty will be finding their way to owners around Australia."

According to Performax, each Camaro needs about 250 hours of work for the left-hand drive to right-hand conversion. The work involves changes to steering, emissions equipment, lighting, air-conditioning and ventilation and body. All parts used by Performax are ISO-accredited.

"It's a major job achieved with the benefit of Performax International's 20 years' experience in the industry and our use of the latest computer-aided processes," Mr Soper said. "The Camaro is our best product yet and achieved its ADR certification with flying colours. Our goal was to produce a right-hand drive Camaro that drives and looks as it would at home in the United States, and we've certainly achieved that."
