Australia Might Use Clean Energy Subsidies To Build New Coal Power Plants

Australia might have gotten the whole clean energy subsidy business wrong, as the country could employ funds set aside for green solutions to build a new generation of coal-fueled power stations.

The news does not come from a panicked environmentalist group, but from Treasurer Scott Morrison, who said that using funds from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation finance the next-generation coal power stations. That does not sound right no matter how you write or say it, so let’s dig into the topic at hand.

Curiously, experts of the field warn that the investment will bring higher prices for consumers if it is done, as eco-friendly alternatives are becoming cheaper by the day, but the price of the combustible sedimentary rock could rise significantly after the decision is made.

The energy minister of the current cabinet, Joh Frydenberg, has stated that he was committed to a “technology neutral” approach to the field, and has even created a subcommittee of the Cabinet to oversee the progress.

Australia’s energy minister says that several countries in Asia use “clean-coal” technology in numerous power stations, with over 700 facilities of this type being established in India.

Since Australia is the world’s biggest coal exporter, he feels that it would be wise to see how it could employ similar technologies. The government official described a blackout that occurred in South Australia last year as a wake-up call for the nation regarding renewable energy, which can be tricky to employ in every condition possible.

As you can imagine, wind turbines do not work when the bulk movement of air is not powerful enough, and solar panels can only function if the light from the Sun is bright enough to ensure their operation. However, these solutions can be implemented with great results.

These statements do not convince the opposition of the government, and its representatives have understandably requested to see the proposals before offering their support.

As Australia’s ABC reminds, the country has remained committed to its 2020 renewable energy target, so it will have to be sure to clean out its power grid according to the Paris Climate Change agreement.
