You probably know the Toyota Hiace van from various Japanese auto shows or meetings where dozens of them show up wearing crazy colors, low suspension, shiny rims and all that stuff. But the Hiace is a popular van in other places, like Australia, where it’s on sale since 1971 and there are currently over 280,000 roaming around there.
The Toyota Hiace just got some updates for 2014 while retaining the same price form last year to increase its desirability.
Stylistically, this van is almost an icon, so don’t expect to see unusual shapes on the revamped model. It got a slightly modified front end, with slightly redesigned headlights, bumper and larger radiator grille openings which are also trapezoidal now.
Due to customers wanting the Hiace feel more like a normal car, the van’s interior is now sporting two separate almost-bucket front seats with a central console in the middle, redesigned four-spoke steering wheel, a new LCD multi information display and cruise control.
Other features from before include seatbelt warning buzzer and lamp, rearview camera with a 3.3-inch screen fitted in the electrochromic rear-view mirror, a shifter position indicator for the automatic version and an Eco driving indicator.
The Toyota Hiace comes in three body styles, two wheelbases (Long WheelBase and Super Long WheelBase), two engines (2.7-liter VVTi gasoline or 3-liter turbo-diesel) and two transmissions (five-speed manual or four-speed automatic).
Price for the LWB gasoline-powered van starts at AU$32,990, diesel adds AU$4,000 while the automatic comes for an extra AU$2,500. The SLWB van is available at AU$40,990 while the one for hauling people starts at AU$53,490.
