Aussie Volvo Gets Twin-Turbo D5, 2.0l D Engines

The Volvo range for the Australian market will be expanded for 2010 model year with the addition of two new engines, the twin-turbo D5 and the four-cylinder 2.0D. The former will featured on the XC60, XC70 and S80, while the latter will replace the previous generation D5 on the C30, S40 and V50.

The twin-turbo, which will be the star of its range, develops 202 hp and 420 Nm of torque and comes paired with a six-speed adaptive Geartronic transmission and the standard Haldex All Wheel Drive system.

According to Volvo, the new engine improves acceleration times in all of the models, while at the same time reducing fuel consumption by about 1.2/km.

The 2.0l D engine on the other hand, besides bringing the improved fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions advertised by Volvo, comes with another novelty: the six-speed Powershift gearbox.

With its help, the engine develops 134 hp at 4,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. As for the fuel consumption of the new unit and its gearbox, Magnus Jonsson, Volvo Cars R&D vice president had this to say:

Powershift contributes to a fuel consumption saving of about eight percent compared with a conventional automatic transmission."

"It's not just any old automatic transmission: lower fuel consumption combined with increased comfort and higher performance sounds like an impossible equation. But with Powershift we have shown that this is perfectly possible,"
