Spectacular by its power-packing nature, drag racing is also very dangerous. Probably not to the same extend as in its early days, but when you’re out there on the drag strip you know that at some point things might blow up.
Sometimes it can be a tire, which can send you flying if you’re not as lucky as Paul Mouhayet was last week, but these race cars are also known for blowing their engines now and then. And that’s exactly what happened to Anthony Maatouk’s “VL GOD” a few days ago at Australia’s Sydney Dragway.
A well-known racing figure locally, Maatouk drives a heavily modified Holden VL Commodore, a four-door sedan built by GM’s Australian arm from 1986 through 1988. Fitted with a turbocharged mill, the VL GOD can run 6-second quarter miles at over 200 mph (322 km/h). Hopefully the vehicle will be back at the races pretty soon...
