A 1968 US road regulation requires vehicles to switch their headlights between low and high beam at night, when passing oncoming traffic. Audi’s matrix-beam eliminates the need to switch between the phases, thus opposing the rule.
Audi’s headlights found on the A8 models, feature multiple LEDs, sensors and cameras that allows the beam to be automatically adjusted, based on what’s in front of the car. Also their direction can adapt to the corner in which the car is driving.
Industry representatives are preparing to meet with the US regulators to negotiate the change of the old regulation. "The lighting technology changed dramatically in the last 10 to 15 years," Stephan Berlitz, Audi's head of lighting innovations, said in an interview. "It's difficult to do all these innovative things in this regulation from 1968."
Audi’s new Matrix-Beam headlights will debut as an option on the A8, which starts at €70,000 in Germany.
