Audi’s future hybrid supercar could use gasoline power instead of diesel, the company’s R&D boss Wolfgang Durheimer announced earlier this week.
Speaking to Auto Express, Durheimer said the German supercar “is progressing in design”, but revealed the vehicle intented to sit above the R8 could get a gasoline engine due to new 24 Hours of Le Mans rules.
“It’s progressing in design, but the technical platform isn’t yet decided. The question is the TDI engine. It needs to be a global car, and diesel isn’t great in China. The new law regulates the amount of energy in a tank of fuel, which [would] eliminate the diesel advantage, turning the picture upside down,” he said.
In addition, Durheimer confirmed that Audi is pondering a smaller mid-engined sportscar that could be slotted below the R8: “We have already designed and packaged cars like this. If we do do it, a mid-engine layout makes sense, with one trunk in the front and one in the back.”
