Earlier this year, the EU has decided that all vehicles sold on the old continent will have emergency in-car calling as a standard feature by 2018. Audi has recently announced that it has selected SiriusXM Connected Vehicle Services to provide the company’s SOS call, and it has now decided to add a unique feature to it: the human touch.
The premium suite of services includes features such as automatic crash notification, which will be part of the new generation of its connectivity suite, beginning in the 2017 Audi Q7. Considering the SUV will reach the U.S. market next year, it turns the model into one of the first cars to have the emergency service.

The German carmaker claims this new enhancement will add the potential for helpful and soothing human intervention in emergencies. To be more precise, it will provide Audi connect Emergency Response as part of the SOS call in Audi vehicles. Aside from the automatic notification of an airbag deployment, Sirius XM will manage the situation in the car with the customer and coordinate the 911 response.

As to the human touch enhancement, Audi says those in need will be able to ask manually for help by pressing the SOS button in the overhead console in the case of an injury or other health situation.

The industry has been using high technology for quite a while now, but this is a new step altogether, considering that it’s almost like a computer that acts as a first responder. In any emergency scenario, the person calling from the car is kept on the phone by an operator while a second operator takes necessary steps to help those in the vehicle, such us summoning emergency medical aid.

This technology also allows the owner to file a police report quickly while the service keeps track of the car and helps law enforcement officers to localize it.

“In addition to the services supported by Sirius XM, the new Audi Connect suite of services will allow Audi owners to request roadside assistance, obtain service reminders, and remotely manage their vehicles, such as by locking and unlocking doors using an app on their smartphones or watches.”
