Audi is not killing off its range of big diesel engines, but developing new and improved versions of them.
According to a report quoting company insiders, the German company will unveil the next generation of its V8 TDI power plant at this year’s Vienna Motor Symposium.
We must note that the presentation of Audi’s next V8 TDI unit has not been confirmed by official sources, but this is not the first time when a company’s plans are leaked ahead of the scheduled unveiling.
According to Car&Driver, Audi will launch a new V8 TDI unit in April for the next-generation A8. The diesel engine will apparently provide over 400 HP and a maximum torque of approximately 500 lb-ft (677 Nm). Since the level of torque specified in the report is much lower than current values of the current V8 TDI, we expect the actual unit to provide even more torque.
According to unnamed industry insiders, the V8 TDI version of 2017 Audi A8 will have a 0-62 MPH (0-100 km/h) acceleration time of just over four seconds. The resources provided by the new diesel V8 unit could eventually be harnessed by other models sold by the Volkswagen Group, like the Porsche Panamera and the next-generation Bentley Continental.
Along with the V8 TDI unit, Audi is expected to showcase an electrically assisted V6 TDI engine. The latter would be an evolution of the power plant shown in the RS5 TDI prototype. According to company insiders, the new engine would feature an electric centrifugal supercharger. The unit is expected to deliver a sporty experience from a diesel motor with loads of torque and impressive throttle responsiveness.
At first, the new diesel engines from Audi will be available on the European market. Eventually, the US market could get the yet-unconfirmed V8 TDI and electrically supercharged V6 TDI. However, first, Audi must move on from its involvement in the Dieselgate scandal and fix all of its affected units.
