Audi has secured the overall win at the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sunday, with the No.2 Joest car driven by Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen and Loic Duval taking the 12th crown for the German automaker.
Danish driver Tom Kristensen, already the most successful Le Mans driver of all time, added his ninth career win at the Circuit de la Sarthe. The No.2 Audi completed 348 laps in the 24-hour race, finishing one lap ahead of Toyota’s No.8 car, which was driven by Anthony Davidson, Stephane Sarrazin and Sebastien Buemi.
As for the lower categories, the Oak Racing Morgan-Nissan won the LMP2 class, while Porsche Team Manthey took first position in the LM GTE Pro. Porsche won the LM GTE Amateur class as well, with IMSA Performance Matmut crossing the line ahead of AF Corse’s Ferraris.
Unfortunately, this year’s race was overshadowed by the death of Danish driver Allan Simonsen. The 34-year-old crashed in the opening laps of the race and died from injuries at Le Mans’ medical center shortly after. He was racing for Aston Martin. Simonson is the first 24 Hours of Le Mans race fatality since 1986, when Jo Gartner lost his life.
