Audi USA's 2017 A4 allroad Commercial Shows Rallycross Action and Jumps

Are wagons cool again? In Europe, they never went out of fashion, which is why the A4 allroad is made by Audi and not Jeep.

There's an all-new generation out this year and for the first time in forever, there'll be magic, there'll be fun. And that doesn't have to stop if everything is frozen over.

It seems that Audi wanted to take what it saw in Volkswagen's Golf Alltrack and make it more fun. You get not only jumping but also some prolonged drifting action.

The commercial is called "Sunday Drive" and all the paved roads are replaced with the stuff you saw when wagons had horses at the front. It might look like a discreet family vehicle, but the A4 allroad is even more prone to sideways stuff because its AWD system is permanently engaged, unlike the one in the Golf.

Also, you get a decent little 2-liter turbo powerhouse, sending all of 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft through a standardized seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. The A4 is more suited to highway and backroad driving than the Q5 because it's got a lower center of gravity.

Still not impressed? How about the fact that it gets to 60 in 5.6 seconds, faster than a Golf GTI. And thanks to all the clever thermal management, the EPA rating is 23 city/28 highway. Put that in your decaf and drink it!

The spec is based on the A4 quattro, so you have your Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige models. The base price of one of these is $44,950, so you're paying $5,500 more for the fact that it's a wagon with off-road gear. But when you consider that you get 58.5 cubic feet of cargo space, it's not such a bad deal. It's not a radical increase over the sedan, but you can arrange dividers or fold the seats flat.

Compared to the normal A4, the allroad has a new grille with vertical chrome bars, lower bumper rugged treatment, specific wheel designs and adaptive headlights. The drive mode selector also has on allroad mode, which locks in the AWD. But don't expect the same ground clearance as in the Q5.
